Distance between signals
weezzah replied to sf_giants15's topic in General Discussion [Singleplayer]
I also feel there's a lot of distance variation with the W9 and W14 speed begin and end signs. It makes the driving style more hesitant than it should be perhaps, but maybe that's just how it is? Usually I find myself able to meet speed reductions purely based on visuals because Polish railways are a little more laidback compared to for example the German ones, which makes you less on edge because there's no PZB, braking curves and what have you. -
Pretty much nailed it there. It'd be great to have the camera effects be adjustable or optional. But that's a very valid point that in first-person simulators we'd also want to see things like we would if we were actually there. That's kind of a simulation of its own. Could add being blinded by the sun, and then to fix it, simply roll down the blinds or put on sunglasses. Other sims have done this when I think about it.

Also the camera-like "eye" adaptation feature may have something to do with it, especially when you're in the cab 😉

Glorified PDF viewer? 😄 I'm hoping you have a lot of track data available in Unity which can give us detailed timetables in the release version? *crossing fingers* -

When driving these routes I've been thinking "what the... am I doing out here?", and now I know, thank you 🙂 -
Seems like it, but it'll be restricted to Level 0 in the TRAXX ** (edit) Source:

Most NPC's seem to be fixed, but this one still has holes in his head on both sides: My previous report on this bug:

It is possible to drive without noticing these issues as the fast movement will only happen if you hold the key for half a second or whatever under certain conditions. If you do mostly small taps to change between the upper detents and only do longer presses when you're in the initial to full service range then you're good, no problems whatsoever (with the exception of test case 2). But from the referenced thread above I had to investigate to see what caused the unwanted fast movement of the lever as I've experienced it myself a couple of times. The issue was how the fast emergency brake feature is interleaved with normal brake operations in the upper range. The lever implementation seems a little contrived to me. Keep it simple. It's just a brake lever. And we can emergency brake with the 1 key anyways. An inconsistent behavior with the lever is described in test case 2: If you set the lever to the initial position (press 6 then 3) then the fast movement will not occur with a long press of the 3 key. But it will occur if you manually move the lever up and snap it into the initial position with the 9 key, and then press and hold the 3 key to apply brake. Why is that even a thing?

Signals and speed limits feature

I haven't seen any trace of a unified dedicated software displaying timetables like the EBuLa. There might be, who knows. I think they use paper timetables and timetables displayed on tablets mostly. Here are some random links showing timetable use: Paper timetable in use https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WgkNK7XLs0 Tablet at time 3:52 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kemKQb2V24A Dedicated tablet at time 1:30 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKIUE6c_pLg Timetable on display at time 2:20 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_1bc2tLLZc Timetable on the PL forum https://forum.simrail.eu/topic/487-rozkład-jazdy/?do=findComment&comment=1951 -
The only part left of the suggestion then is that the radio is not initialized when you spawn into a station, for example Bedzin at channel 2. That means you're on the wrong channel until you leave Bedzin and pass a W28 or a home signal. Therefore it's still a valid suggestion to initialize the radio at the moment you spawn in I think.
-
With the automated radio channels option set to off, it would be great to have the radio set to the correct channel when you spawn into a train in multiplayer. Many times you spawn into a train not knowing the correct radio channel in the vicinity, especially if you're new and/or the radio channel sign is way behind you because you spawned into a running train. The latter is probably the most common and the most important reason in my opinion. And it also makes sense that a running train is configured properly. If it's not then the AI driver did a bad job before you took over the controls 😉 This suggestion came out of this thread:
-
I had a feeling about that... In terms of text chat I must have been within range since I was in the siding at Sosnowiec Glowny. Maybe it was something wrong with the server? But aren't all AI trains set to channel 1 initially? If they are then maybe it should be set to the correct channel when you spawn into the train instead? There aren't many radio channel signs along the tracks and chances for spawning in after one is high I imagine. And then there's the auto tune radio channel feature... Have to investigate 🙂 Either way, the comms problem was all on me then, sorry for not responding @noirceur Edit: It appears that it's set to channel 1 when automated radio tuning is off, as expected. BUT, would make sense to take over a train driven by the AI to be configured correctly. If the channel is not set correctly when we take over a train while it's running then the AI has been doing a bad job 😉 Made a suggestion:

How to talk to dispatch
weezzah replied to SpeedyRetreat's topic in General Discussion [Multiplayer]
If you have a browser that supports it: Right-click and select Translate to English in the context menu, but I do agree with you, and the creator of the thread 🙂 Derailing from the topic, I do recommend checking out the pdf in the first link. It's in polish, of course, but it does have a lot of information for drivers. Much of it is way out of scope for SimRail use, but still, interesting to get insights straight from the source. The pdf has selectable text so I've used Google to translate and read it to me too. -
When I look straight ahead and press F12 to center TrackIR then the camera ends up in a pitched down attitude: To correct this I have to look down and then hit F12 to get the camera to center and look straight forward. The pitched down attitude will also cause the camera to tilt when looking to the sides, which is weird: Would be great if TrackIR worked the same way in all locomotives. Only the Dragon 2 has this problem.

How to talk to dispatch

Found a couple of threads on the PL side Communication between the train and the dispatcher: [EN] Basic guide of DUTY TRAFFIC and communication / radiocommunication duty - driver: -
Currently it's too easy to accidentally move the brake lever into the emergency position in the EU07. The reason why this happens is because if the brake key [ 3 ] is held down while the lever is in any position above the initial position, then the brake lever will move quickly into the emergency position. This is probably meant to be a helpful feature, but it's causing more problems than it solves to be honest. Test Case 1 Set brake lever into the running position by pressing [ 6 ] Situation: If the driver thinks the brake lever is in the initial position then the drivers reflex is to press and hold [ 3 ] to apply brake. Surprise, the brake lever will now quickly move into the emergency position, and the driver is left thinking the brake lever is buggy. Test Case 2 Press [ 6 ] for running position Press [ 3 ] for initial position Apply a little brake with the [ 3 ] key Release brakes with the [ 4 ] key until the brake lever visually snaps into the initial position Situation: The driver has left the brake lever in the initial position and thinks braking can be applied like it did before by pressing and holding the [ 3 ] and [ 9 ] keys. What the driver is unaware of is that when the lever snapped into the initial position, it is now set to move quickly into emergency breaking if you press and hold the [ 3 ] key. Again, feels like a bug because the lever did not move like the driver intended. Solution I think it would be better to keep the controls simple and predictable: Press [ 3 ] or [ 9 ] to move brake lever into a detent When in the initial to full service range, press and hold [ 3 ] or [ 9 ] to apply or release brakes As simple as that. There's no need for a press and hold for emergency braking feature because we already have the [ 1 ] key which immediately puts the lever into emergency 😉 Here's the thread that this bug report is based on: These are the brake lever positions in the EU07: - Disabled - Fill - Running - Initial - Full Service - Re-Application - Emergency Braking This bug may apply to other locomotives with the same lever behavior.

Add notches to brake when using keyboard
weezzah replied to hoppturee-'s topic in Suggestions for improvements [Singleplayer]
I wonder if it is a bug in EU07 that the lever all of a sudden goes emergency brake, even though you're using the [ 3 ] and [ 9 ] near the initial position. Of course, I can't seem to get it to trigger now. Edit: Okay, got it. So while having the lever in any position above the initial position, press and hold the [ 3 ] key. Doing so makes the handle go through all of the upper detents and quickly continue passed the braking range, and into emergency. This is probably by design to go quickly from zero braking to emergency braking. This fast movement does not happen when in the initial to full service range. If you single press [ 6 ], then single press [ 3 ], you get to the initial position. From here you can press and hold [ 3 ], and it will NOT move fast into the emergency position. When in this range it will allow you to press and hold [ 3 ] and [ 9 ] as much as you'd like, as long as you stay below initial and at or above full service. Now here's the thing about the braking range that is buggy: If you're in the braking range and unbrake with the [ 9 ] key until you get to the initial position, the next time you press and hold [ 3 ] it will quickly go into emergency. That is most likely what many do when they experience going-quickly-into-emergency-when-just-doing-simple-braking. And I'm not a fan it either 😉 Edit: I will write a bug. -
Add notches to brake when using keyboard
weezzah replied to hoppturee-'s topic in Suggestions for improvements [Singleplayer]
Not sure if you mean for a specific loco or across the board, but for the EU07 I think the notch-less range between initial position and full service is quite fitting for a lever like this. But if there were to be notches in that range then maybe 20 notches or so, at least you'd have to have quite a few notches to allow fine tuning, since you don't have (in theory) infinite positions anymore. To get a feel for the brake force application I try to visually get used to what the lever positions will give me in terms of pressure on the brake pressure gauge. Start out on the initial position, observe what that does to the speed, and tap in adjustments accordingly. Most importantly keep it simple and don't panic 😄
