Grass isn't visible - Linux

Recommended Posts

Hello! Unfortunately, grass doesn't get rendered at all on my pc in this game. All I can see is just the blank ground textures. Is there anything I can do about it? As Linux isn't officially supported by Simrail and I'm running the game with Steam Proton, I don't think that my grass issue can be resolved by the developers.

This is my system:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7700

GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7800XT

64GB RAM

OS: Pop!_OS 22.04

Linux Kernel: 6.6.6-76060606-generic

It's a tough call, but maybe someone has SimRail installed on Linux, although I sincerely doubt it.  If no one can advise you effectively then I would recommend installing two systems on your computer, Linux and Windows I guess will be the only solution.

IMO it's not necessary for me to additionally install Windows only for playing Simrail. The game runs on Linux very well, as you can see on this site:

Several people already have tested it, and with the Proton compatibility layer, installation is done with one click.

It is close to perfect for me, with great performance and graphics. Only problem is, as mentioned, the grass, which isn't shown at all.

Looking at the video below, you can see that the grass on this Linux system loads correctly, perhaps changing the graphics card driver will help, not necessarily the latest drivers. It should be ok. At least on Nvidia

Lots of people run Linux with AMD GPUs, specifically avoiding Nvidia GPUs because they require the extra step of installing the proprietary driver to work at all.  AMD GPUs just work out of the box because they have open-source drivers, but it seems to be with AMD GPUs that the grass is missing.

It would be interesting to know how the grass is implemented.  It could be that there's an Nvidia-specific feature being used (which would also be a problem on Windows, presumably), or maybe it's just an obscure but standard feature that the open-source devs have somehow missed and could use reminding about.

We already had once a case where once there was a compute shader that didn't produce the same results on AMD as Nvidia (probably yet again, due to AMD being more strict and closer to specification). Sadly, I don't have the access personally to AMD cards the moment, but we have some at the office. Thing is, I don't think it's been reported on those PCs that grass doesn't work. So it's probably a combination of both AMD and Linux. Sadly trying to get any hours to even do some work on Linux support is really tough, which to me - as a person who is for a long time very frustrated with the idiotic direction Windows is heading - is very depressing, as I love my Steam Deck and I know it also doesn't render grass correctly.

I'm thankful for you even considering doing some Linux troubleshooting as this is not something one can naturally expect from games that officially only support Windows. Also, I'm willing to provide you with additional information about my system, if necessary. As my system is very new, so is my Linux install, and it may be some distro-specific packages, which determine whether grass is working in Simrail or not. And I also want to mention that apart from grass, everything is working perfectly: the graphics are awesome, and the game runs with almost no noticeable stutters.

The Steam Deck internally runs Linux on AMD hardware.  So there's your access!
