If you make a note of the Train number you had chosen to drive before you get the message wait until the game loads then go back to the main menu and choose the same train again and 90% of the time it loads just fine. Not sure why it does this but it works for me.

No not at all I nearly always drive frieght trains and just see it as an occupational hazard and probably realistic in most cases. I just turn the bot on and have a break.
