Hi,
I’m having a recurring audio problem in SimRail that has been happening for a few weeks now, and I haven’t been able to find a solution.
The problem is that the audio randomly starts cutting out and stuttering very heavily. It sounds like the audio is constantly being interrupted for very short moments: sound → silence → sound → silence, sometimes many times within a second. When it gets really bad, almost all of the game’s audio is affected.
It is not happening all the time. Sometimes I can drive for quite a long time without any problems at all, and then it suddenly starts again. During some sessions the problem can stay very strong for around 3–4 minutes, then it becomes less severe for a while and later comes back again. Sometimes there are only a few individual short stutters.
I have also noticed that it can sometimes get worse when entering or leaving stations, or when there is a lot happening around me. However, this is not always the case and I cannot reproduce it at one specific station or location.
The problem also seems to be independent of the train or vehicle. I have experienced it with different vehicles, so I have not found any specific train where the problem consistently happens.
I mainly play Multiplayer, and this is where I notice it. I am talking about normal multiplayer sessions, not a specific single-player scenario.
Another strange thing is that I have sometimes noticed the same kind of stuttering in the main menu. There is background train audio in the menu, and sometimes even that audio starts cutting out.
I also tested the game while having YouTube Music playing in the background. When the problem happened, YouTube Music started stuttering at the same time as SimRail. This makes me think that the problem might not be related to one specific SimRail sound, but possibly to the audio playback/system itself.
The first time I noticed this problem was around the time when I bought my first route DLC (Warsaw Route DLC / Łódź Junction). Before that, I had only played the base game routes (Warsaw–Katowice and Katowice–Kraków), and I did not have this problem back then. The problem now also happens on the original base game routes, so it is not limited to one specific DLC route.
I have already tried quite a few things:
changing between stereo and mono
changing the Windows audio output device
changing Windows audio settings
disabling audio enhancements
changing the audio format
verifying the game files through Steam
deleting the SimRail HTTP cache
updating my NVIDIA graphics driver to the latest version
testing different audio devices and settings
None of these things fixed the problem.
I also tested my system with LatencyMon while the problem was happening. It reported some relatively high latency values. The highest reported DPC execution time was around 2.4 ms, with ntoskrnl.exe at the top. HDAudBus.sys (Windows High Definition Audio Bus) also appeared in the results.
One other strange thing: I tried recording the problem with the Windows Game Bar. While I could clearly hear the audio stuttering while playing, the stuttering was not always audible when I played the recorded video afterwards. I am not sure why this happens, but I thought it might be useful information.
I have attached the SimRail log from a recent session and a LatencyMon screenshot. I also have a video recording of the problem, although the audio issue is unfortunately not always audible in the recording itself.
I really like SimRail and mainly play Multiplayer, so it is quite frustrating to have this problem because it can make a session difficult to enjoy when it starts happening. I have already tried many things on my side, but I still cannot figure out what is causing it.
Hopefully the log and the other information can help to find the cause.
Thanks for taking a look at it.
