Hasler Bern tachograph sound

I've never been in a real EU07, but the Hasler Bern tachograph is barely audible, even when the locomotive is coasting at idle power. I have to look the sides to separate the engine sounds from the tachograph ticking sound to hear it through my headphones. But even then it sounds faint and muted. I had all volume settings at max, and I used an old Beyerdynamic headset plugged into the PC when I looked into it.

I've added some of the reference I checked out on YouTube, so you can hear for yourself, what do you think?

First one is a very noisy reference, but this video seems to have a greater frequency range and picks up more of the engine room noises, which should drown out the ticks a little more. The tick-tick-tick-clack sound is still audible when up to speed around the 5 minute mark and onwards:

Put on some over the ear headphones, set SimRail sounds to 7.1 surround instead of stereo in the menu and use your headphone software to turn on virtual surround sound (or connect a pro logic surround sound AV amp to the computer if you have the 7 speakers in your room)

You will hear the hasslers ticking way louder, and the rumble and whine of the converter will be almost too much, the loud thud as your loco's wheels go over points wakes you up if you are dozing a little, the flange squeal of not only the loco but the coaches / wagons behind you sound amazing.

Then play about paning the camera in the cab around (or use a head tracker  ...  FaceTrackNoIr will act as a 'middle man' and convert most other head tracking methods from web cams to IR units into a TrackIr signal that works in SimRail... then you really start to have fun with the sounds moving around as you move your head.

I didn't think of changing the sound settings, was on stereo, it did make a difference although I have to find out how to get the virtual surround going. Thanks for pointing that out 🙂

But I think I've figured out what the SimRail Hasler sound is missing: The resonance from the EU07s hard surface walls, which I think is what makes the Hasler sound pop out more in the videos than in SimRail. You can hear from the videos that the room is quite pingy. And the ticks from the Hasler pings off the walls and fills the room more. The current Hasler recording in SimRail is quite dry. At least, that's my current take on it.
